Being a sensitive teenage girl can be a challenge.
Honestly, it’s a unique and special ingredient in life and something I’m very familiar with.
My teachers and coaches used to call me “shy.”
I realize that being sensitive can mirror shyness because I could be timid in certain situations.
If it didn’t feel safe, I definitely didn’t share my thoughts or ideas in the classroom, on the field or in the pool.
Because, when you’re highly sensitive your brain and body are very responsive to the energy and stimuli around you.
So, my brain would tell me to play it safe and retreat until equilibrium set in.
For years I was told to:
- toughen up
- don’t take things so personally
- just ignore the backhanded comments
I understand, now, that those suggestions were coming from a loving place.
But they didn’t help.
Nor did they teach me how to manage my inner world.
So, I thought I needed to change who I was.
But that didn’t work either.
It was exhausting to try to be something I wasn’t.
You know what set me free?
A GUIDE who understood me for me.
And a concept called METACOGNITION.
Once I learned how to pay attention to my thinking, I was able to:
- develop a sense of personal power by setting strong personal boundaries
- embrace my gifts, talents and passions – even if they felt like a curse sometimes
Even though I had some great teachers in my life, no one taught me how much my emotions were influencing everything I did … my discipline, my organization, my motivation.
And, when I learned how to separate fact from interpretation – I was blown away at how clear and simple things can be.
That’s right, you don’t have to listen to the negative thoughts that pop up and try to trick you into believing they’re there to keep you safe.
It’s incredibly powerful to learn how to have control over your inner world, because when you do, you’re:
- able to see all the options
- allow your gifts and purpose to fuel you
Are you ready for rock solid resilience?
Here’s what it looks like:
Mindful thinking + a growth mindset = powerful metacognition
